Our Community
We invite you to share in the growth of our enthusiastic new business destination, a pristine highland opened by expressways and interstates in the 1990s. Tourism,
technology, and transportation thrive here amid three national parks in the very center of the Eastern U.S.
But perhaps more than a great place to work, Raleigh County is an ideal place to live. A low crime rate (West Virginia has enjoyed the nation's lowest crime rate for a half century) attracts many of our new residents. But we can't neglect the lofty plateaus of forest and farmland for which our county is known. Even in the heart of our largest city, you'll find woodland and park around every corner.
We invite you to explore our communities -- online or by touring the area.
And we hope you find this collection of information and photographs helpful and entertaining.

Raleigh County... Southern West Virginia's Retail Hub
At southern West Virginia's retail hub, the shops are always full. More than 225,000 shoppers (with an effective buying income of $800,300,000) comprise a market which grows by the day.
Thanks to superb highways, shoppers regularly come from as far south and east as Virginia and as far north as Sutton. National chains have opened large stores
here. Local merchants offer specialized goods and services.
Thinking of doing business here? You'll find plenty to like. Besides enjoying a scenic environment and the lowest crime rate in the nation, you'll find a host of compatible local industries in which to invest. What suits your fancy?
Transportation
Many companies have located headquarters and distribution centers here as a result of accessibility. In the center of the East, Raleigh County stands at an interstate crossroads. Interstates 64 and 77 join at Beckley with the expressway U.S. 19. Coastal and Midwest markets are less than a day away.
Air transportation and cargo service are provided by Raleigh County Airport, five minutes west of Beckley.
Rail service is provided by CSX and Norfolk & Western.
Freight is provided by eight motor lines whose interstate routes converge at Beckley.
Passenger air and rail are provided by U.S. Air Express and Amtrak, respectively.
Museums
Dedicated to stimulating young minds, The Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia offers a kaleidoscope of exhibits normally available only in large cities. Built of rail cars in Beckley's New River Park, the museum also houses a planetarium.
Wildwood House, former home of Alfred Beckley, tells the story of this pioneer engineer's mission to build a town in the wilderness. Off South Kanawha Street, the museum is one mile south of uptown Beckley.
The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine at New River Park is, for some people, a once in a lifetime experience, and for others a way of life. Tours beneath the city journey through the history of the mining industry's early years.
The Arts
Theatre West Virginia, the state performing arts company, entertains thousands each summer at the outdoor dramas "Honey in the Rock" and "Hatfields and McCoys" and through other intermittent musicals.
Soldier's Memorial Theatre & Arts Centre was recently established in uptown Beckley as a center for public performance and exhibition and provides art education.
Galleries and small performance spaces are found throughout the county at libraries, schools, and in other public buildings. Beckley Newspapers and Tamarack run continuous exhibits of local art.
Private art courses are available through many sources, and a well-rounded arts program is available through the public school system.
